Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Wash separately for the first few cycles: deep and saturated colours release a little dye at first. Do not bleach, do not dry clean.

Textured weaves such as seersucker, waffle and gauze are meant to look relaxed: they need no ironing, and they soften with every wash.

Cotton, and why the staple matters

Jersey is knitted from a single continuous yarn rather than woven from two sets of threads. The loops give it stretch, and stretch is why it settles around a duvet insert instead of standing away from it.

A knit, with all that follows

Knitted cloth does not crease, because the loops absorb the fold. It also has more give, so a fitted sheet in jersey goes over a deep mattress without a fight.

Nothing to iron, ever

Wash warm, dry low, put it straight on the bed. Avoid high heat, which is the one thing that will shrink a knit.

Questions about this fabric

Will it go baggy?

A knit in 100 % cotton keeps its shape if you dry it on low. High heat is what distorts the loops.

Is it warm?

Warmer than percale, cooler than flannel. It is the fabric for the middle of the year.

Does it pill?

Knits can pill where they rub. Wash inside out and on a gentle cycle and it stays clean.
